Glencore claims to exceed 2 billion USD in terms of tax obligations in DRC in the last 3 years

Glencore’s 4th annual conference was held on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 in the capitol room of the Rotana hotel in Kinshasa. This accountability exercise was centered under the theme: “Glencore, a partner for the energy transition and for the sustainable development of the DRC”.

In her speech, Marie-Chantal Kaninda, Vice-President of Glencore RDC and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kamoto Copper Company (KCC), briefly presented the performance of Glencore’s activities in the country during the year 2022. To believe him, Glencore has invested over 8 billion US dollars over the years, mainly in Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) and Mutanda Mining; and for the year 2021 alone, it has invested 293 million USD.

Below are Glencore’s performances cited by Marie-Chantal Kaninda:

✓ As for our social investments for 2021 amounted to more than 4.3 million USD.

✓ Our contribution in terms of taxes, duties and royalties was US$856 million for the year 2021.

✓ Doing things well is not a performance, but a standard and a duty for any economic operator, respectful of the laws of the country and aware of his role, his mission as well as his responsibility towards the communities and the whole of the Congolese population.

✓ It is important to note that over the last three years, we have greatly exceeded the amount of 2 billion dollars in terms of tax obligations.

✓ These amounts are reinforced by the signing of social commitment specifications by KCC and MUMI with their respective communities, in accordance with the requirements of the Mining Code.

In addition, Glencore claims to have paid $856 million in taxes, duties and royalties paid into the state coffers for the year 2021, allowing it to exceed the threshold of $2 billion in tax obligations fulfilled during the 3 last years.

The fourth year of this event brought together many stakeholders including teams from Glencore DRC, led by Marie-Chantal Kaninda, teams from Glencore International from Switzerland, teams from Glencore operations in Kolwezi in Lualaba led by the Deputy Managing Director of Kamoto Copper Company (KCC), Mr Placide Nkala, and the Managing Director of Mutanda Mining (MUMI), Mr Christian Rampa Luhembwe.

It is in front of an audience made up of deputies, senators, representatives of the government and the presidency of the DRC, representatives of civil society, experts in the mining sector, numerous economic operators, directors of the cabinets of the Chief of the State and the Prime Minister, that Glencore presented its various achievements.

During these meetings, a panel of experts was held on: the “Energy transition and sustainable development of the DRC”, led by Mr Yves Ilunga, vice-president of Glencore, in charge of Business Development, who brought together: Mr Jean-Jacques Kayembe, National Coordinator of the EITI in the DRC, Ms Susannah McLaren from England on behalf of the Cobalt Institute, and Ms Anne-Marie Fleury from Glencore Internationale, from Switzerland.
